MICHELLE POWERS,
FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF
SAVAGE SOUL SISTERS

Savage Soul Sisters' Founder and Creative Director, Michelle Powers talks to ESK about how spirituality and positivity influences her creativitity, boho style and what Flower Power means to her.

How did Savage Soul Sisters come to be?
I have always been into fashion as long as I can remember. Jewelry Design happened serendipitously 20 years ago when I walked into a Nantucket boutique drawn by a unique piece of jewelry, my quest to create one-of-a-kind bold pieces was born.

Did your upbringing and childhood influence your brand vision?
Born and raised in California, I grew up going to the beaches and living the quintessential boho style, which is most certainly a key aspect to the Savage Soul Sisters’ vision.

Where did you learn the craft?
Art has always been a staple in my family. I learned by doing. When I started my business 20 years ago, I attended jewelry workshops.

It was stated that your creations come from an intuitive spirituality and positivity. Can you please expand on how this leads to the final pieces?
I have an ability to see and feel moods quickly, and the ability to see the silver lining in various aspects of life. The journey often starts by sketching amulets and talisman and then adding shapes and colors to enhance the desired mood. There is no beginning or ending in this process, but rather a ride through material and color exploration, slowly revealing a desired mood.

"I want my customers/collectors to feel beautiful.

I want them to feel bold, colorful & happy. I want them to feel ready to take on the world."

Do you have a favorite quote or phrase or belief that serves as a personal motto?
“Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.” So true! I love what I do!

Can you describe Savage Soul Sisters in three words?
Boho, colorful, ethereal.

How do you want your customers to feel when wearing your designs? I want my customers/collectors to feel beautiful. I want them to feel bold, colorful & happy. I want them to feel ready to take on the world. Savage Soul Sisters is the finishing touch. The piece that ties everything together.

The last year has tested everyone. What did it mean to you both personally and professionally?
Personally, it meant that no matter the circumstance, my family is the glue that holds all the moving pieces in place. Professionally, it meant that if you connect with your audience, they will return.

EvolutionSK has a different theme every month. This month is Flower Power. Savage Soul Sisters uses the floral motif throughout many of your designs, why is this motif important to you?
I love nature. I am an avid runner. Wherever I travel to – I always lace up and run. Nature inspires all of our designs. Flowers represent growth, beauty and new beginnings.

Quick Fire Questions:

How do you start your day?

I start my day with a cup of coffee in hand, rushing off to get my son to school. This is my favorite part of the day.

What’s your coffee (or tea) order?

Large coffee with milk in the morning and iced latte in the afternoon.

If we have look in your bag, what would we find?

A tiny bag for all the tiny things so they don’t get lost in my bigger bag (I’m a bit of a neat freak), car keys, house keys, wallet, hand sanitizer, sunglasses, iphone, a mask, lip palm, seasonal allergy medicine for my son and an energy bar or two.

What’s your favorite hobby?

I am an avid runner. I can run anywhere, just lace up my sneakers and go.

Your style icon?

I don’t have one particular style icon per say. I liked Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy for her simple yet elegant effortless style and Sienna Miller for her boho chic style.

What’s the last book you read?

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena. If you like fictional thrillers then you will love this book; a real page-turner.

If you didn’t live in Boston, where would you live?

I would go back to California. If Northern California, it would be Tiburon. If Southern California, I would live in San Diego, more specifically Rancho Santa Fe. Similar to Boston, these places offer quaint neighborhoods near the ocean.

What is the best memento you own from your travels?

I have many, but my absolute favorite is Bottega Veneta body lotion I picked up in Amsterdam. I believe there is nothing more powerful than a scent. It evokes so many wonderful memories of my special time traveling to the Netherlands.

The most unforgettable place you have travelled to is…?

Amalfi Coast. More specifically, Capri and Positano, Italy. I am drawn to the majestic views of the Mediterranean Sea and rugged cliffs. Although quite dangerous, I enjoyed running on the winding roads.
